Meet Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.) Thomas H. Mayfield and other documented Tuskegee Airmen, heroes of the new film Red Tails, at Willingboro Public Library on Sat., Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. An exhibit of photographs of the Tuskegee Airmen and replicas of the types of aircraft they supported and flew will be open at the library from Feb. 1-25. The World War II 332^nd Fighter Group, popularly known as the Tuskegee Airmen, were the first African American pilots and aircraft support personnel in the U.S. Army. Fighting prejudice about the abilities of African American soldiers, they distinguished themselves in combat, becoming one of the most highly decorated units. These civil rights pioneers were recently honored at the inauguration of Pres. Barack Obama and were the 2009 winners of the Trumpet Award.
